The holiday issue of ION Magazine is now on the streets. This slick looking issues features a year in music roundup, an article on Canadian graffiti artist Other (he refused to be interviewed and submitted a short story instead), an article on Tittsworth and an interview with Jason Jones from the Daily Show about his new movie Coopers’ Camera.

The autumn issue of Color is on now out. It might have something to do with their reluctance to use the Canadian spelling of colour, but this magazine is so slick it doesn’t look like it could possibly be produced in a downtown eastside loft. Maybe that’s a compliment, I don’t know. Sure, it’s a skateboard magazine, but there’s a lot more too it. The photography and design blows most other magazines out of the water, the product pages are inventive and they consistently give ink to interesting bands and artists. Pick it up at better book, magazine and corner stores.

The Halloween issue of Ion Magazine is now online and on the the streets. This is interview heavy issue is a good one and here’s why. It features:
-An interview with Pascal Laugier, director of the greatest French torture porn of all time, Martyrs.
-An interview with Eric Berglund from The Tough Alliance, who you really need to listen to (listen to Silly Crimes by The Tough Alliance here).
-An interview with Bruce McDonald (Hardcore Logo) and Stephen McHattie about their terrific new Canadian sci-fi horror thriller Pontypool.
-A ridiculously awesome fashion editorial shot by Kate sZatmari called the Cellar. All the blood stains on the photos are actually real blood. We went through a lot of interns this issue.
-A surprisingly informative article about Goth fashion by Terri Potratz. More interesting than that, Terri reveals she used to have a crush on some dork who wore fake fangs. Reading between the lines, I suspect Terri may have a journal that she calls her “Book of Tears.”
-Local writer/filmmaker David Bertrand tackling the horoscopes. He took a unique approach and picked out a bizarre horror movie that matches up with your sign. The best one he recommends is Possession. There’s a graphic sex scene between a woman and a squid demon in it.
-A Sam Kerr short story about leprechauns and LSD.

Another issue of Sneeze Magazine showed up in the newspaper box on the corner of Abbott and Water this week. Once again, it makes the cheap laminate flooring in my apartment look that much better. It’s also the first magazine to have photos of Darryl Strawberry, Ricky Henderson, skateboarding and fur suit sex all in the same issue. Go pick yourself up a copy for two bucks. It’s now online and will be distributed in the coming days. This one features articles on Patrick McNeil from Brooklyn street art collective Faile, Taschen’s Big Penis Book, Arts and Crafts recording artist Gonzales and the British iPod commercial sensation known as The Ting Tings. Along with Bad Kids Magazine, there’s now a second new tabloid sized magazine on the streets of Vancouver called Sneeze. This one’s a bit more interesting than Bad Kids. It’s distributing online and from a newspaper box, that’s fittingly been tagged, on the corner of Abbott and Water in Gastown, across from the Lamplighter. Sneeze is basically a mixture of two other great Vancouver publications, Color Magazine and the now defunct Made Magazine. Sneeze Magazine is much like a regular sneeze in that sense that it gives me 1/10th of an orgasm when reading it. It’s edited by someone who calls himself Mr. Sneeze and features some excellent photography by Dennis McGrath and Trevor Owsley, an article on Dr. Smoov by Ania Mafi and an interview with skateboarder Satva Leung by Nic Fensom. A copy of Sneeze will cost you $2 or you can buy them from me for $1.50 since I grabbed seven extras. Interesting trades entertained. Good luck Sneeze Magazine.

A nifty new magazine called Bad Kids turned up on the streets of Vancouver recently. This arty and cryptic tabloid-sized mag has no masthead so one can only guess who’s behind it. Smart money is on Erik Devereaux, Cam Dales and Andrew Andrew Andrew judging by the massive back cover ad for their night ‘Eighteen’ at the Royal Unicorn on Saturdays. It features some great photography, a mini-article on local artist Chris Turner and a poem by Chad Buchholz. You can grab Bad Kids at better boutiques in Gastown, Main Street and Yaletown (as if).
