Douglas Ko, The Kim Jong-ILL of one of Canada’s best labels, Summer Lover Unlimited Music, was over at my place this weekend (Aren’t I awesome?). Something Exclaim! won’t tell you about Doug, he always rolls with his own soundtrack. So he stepped in my place and gave me a CD to put on. I of course, ripped it to my computer and played. Doug’s mixtape begins with the russian language version t.A.T.u.’s “All The Things She Said” and ends with a remix of Ashlee Simpson’s “L.O.V.E.” I’d like to be able to tell you what else is on mixtape but none of the songs are labeled so you’ll have to guess. This week is a mystery mixtape! To make it even more fun, Doug has no idea I’m giving it away. Download it here or from the link on the sidebar.
The autumn issue of Color is on now out. It might have something to do with their reluctance to use the Canadian spelling of colour, but this magazine is so slick it doesn’t look like it could possibly be produced in a downtown eastside loft. Maybe that’s a compliment, I don’t know. Sure, it’s a skateboard magazine, but there’s a lot more too it. The photography and design blows most other magazines out of the water, the product pages are inventive and they consistently give ink to interesting bands and artists. Pick it up at better book, magazine and corner stores.

On the left, the brand new album by Wintermitts which is entitled Heirloom. On the right, the packet that comes with the album which contains seeds for heirloom tomatoes. There are also detailed instructions on how to grow and care for your tomatoes. It is rumoured that every tenth album comes with Marijuana seeds (kidding).
Wintermitts are fronted by Lise Monique and they play cutesy bilingual folk-pop. They’re about to embark on a cross-Canada tour. On Thursday they will be having a CD release party at the Railway Club at 9pm and it’s only $7. Stefana Fratila and LaLa will also be there to help send them off. Make it down if you can. It’ll be folktastic.
Check out these photos which Toby Marie Bannister just shot of Black Mountain while on an east coast tour. They’re pretty, they’re spectacular, they’re pretty spectacular.
Just in case you missed this last evening. All my friends laughed at me when I predicted the Canucks would have the first ever perfect season this year. Two games in. Two wins. 1/41 of the way there. Who’s laughing now bitches?
Natalie Vermeer is a local musician, writer and substitute elementary school teacher. We got her to do a mixtape this week and you can download it from here or the link on the sidebar. Here’s what she has to say about her mixtape.
“I was hoping not to recreate yet another break up mix but those really are my favourite. So here is a mix containing several songs that have ended up on every mix I’ve made in the last two years. Let’s just say this mix is the soundtrack to a story of blissed-out love that has both parties quickly snapping out of it, realizing the problems, then missing everything, but ultimately, giving up any chance of anything… to be alone.”
If you’re wondering, Natalie’s really not as emo as the mixtape or write up would suggest. Full tracklisting after the jump which includes Miracle Fortress, Spoon, Man Man, The Blow and a whole lot more. As an added bonus, Natalie has written what she thinks about each song. You might think she uses too many exclamation marks, but that’s actually how she talks. Read the rest »
Now that the fabulous BC Fashion Week has come and gone, the dust has settled and it is time for a quick review of the hot looks and trends coming to a store near you this Spring 2009.
JACQUELINE CONOIR
Jacqueline Conoir was the season opener and sure set the bar with this show. The colour story started in a white fury with high waist pencil skirts to the knee some with flirty flounces The suit jackets and trenches were well tailored with a larger lapel, fitted waist and Seventies style front patch pocket.
Then black to contrast the white, Middle Eastern design details were introduced but still belted at the waist.
Check out the debut video from Tom Anselmi’s music project MIRROR. It features Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode on vocals and it’s pretty damn good. You can see the uncensored version soon at www.mirror.fm
edit: I have just been informed that this is currently the top YouTube music video from Canada. Congratulations MIRROR.
The Halloween issue of Ion Magazine is now online and on the the streets. This is interview heavy issue is a good one and here’s why. It features:
-An interview with Pascal Laugier, director of the greatest French torture porn of all time, Martyrs.
-An interview with Eric Berglund from The Tough Alliance, who you really need to listen to (listen to Silly Crimes by The Tough Alliance here).
-An interview with Bruce McDonald (Hardcore Logo) and Stephen McHattie about their terrific new Canadian sci-fi horror thriller Pontypool.
-A ridiculously awesome fashion editorial shot by Kate sZatmari called the Cellar. All the blood stains on the photos are actually real blood. We went through a lot of interns this issue.
-A surprisingly informative article about Goth fashion by Terri Potratz. More interesting than that, Terri reveals she used to have a crush on some dork who wore fake fangs. Reading between the lines, I suspect Terri may have a journal that she calls her “Book of Tears.”
-Local writer/filmmaker David Bertrand tackling the horoscopes. He took a unique approach and picked out a bizarre horror movie that matches up with your sign. The best one he recommends is Possession. There’s a graphic sex scene between a woman and a squid demon in it.
-A Sam Kerr short story about leprechauns and LSD.

“Oh hey Mr Six Oh Four, I noticed you didn’t do a mixtape last week, what gives?”
“Oh hey Mr/Ms/Mrs Six Oh Four Reader, you are correct but we have a real treat for you this week. Trevor Risk did a 17-song mixtape to make up for it. Not only that, his mixtape features Kish, Gravediggaz, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Concrete Blonde and Queen. Be sure to listen to it in order for super plus maximum enjoyment. The lineup for the Vancouver International Film Festival this year is the strongest it’s been in recent memory. There are some great films playing this year (to be fair there are also some really bad films playing this year as well). The problem is most of the great movies are going to be opening in theatres in a coming weeks. Sure you’ll enjoy movies like Bill Maher’s documentary Religulous or Jean-Claude Van Damme’s tragic comedy JCVD. However unless you value seeing a movie a few weeks before everyone else, you’re wasting your time with most of the Galas and Special Presentations. The key to film festivals is to search out movies that might not get a wide release as this could be your only chance to see them on the big screen, or at all. To make your job of selecting movies a bit easier, here are the trailers for some safe bets as well as show times and links to where you can buy tickets.
I should state I haven’t seen or heard about the large majority of the estimated 4000 films playing at VIFF this year. So I’ll add to this post as I see good ones. I should also state that I’m very bad at making estimates too.
