Jude Feller launched the local brand Lily and Jae in Spring 2007. Since then she has taken North America by storm and now is stepping into the international market and headed for global domination, for sure. I got a chance to pop over to The Lily and Jae Headquarters for a fun little interview about her fall/winter 08/09 line.

Weekly Mixtape 14 »

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. I’ve been extremely busy listening to the stellar new album by Metronomy, sleeping, drinking coffee and watching three dozen films at the Toronto International Film Festival. Will resume regular posting on monday with some Vancouver International Film Festival picks. In the meantime, download and enjoy this week’s mixtape from here or the link on the sidebar. Features Elliott Smith, The Chap, Metronomy, an old school techno jam and a whole lot more.

Weekly Mixtape 13 »

Mixtape time. Get it here or from the link on the sidebar. Confession time as well. I am an evil and manipulative bastard. I make mixtapes that begin with Gwen Stefani’s “What You Waiting For?” and end with Madonna’s “Hung Up” so you’ll listen to all the jams in the middle. Anything will sound good when sandwiched between those two songs. Even the delicious and stinky cheese that is “Finally” by Ce Ce Peniston… the 2k8 mix!

Weekly Mixtape 12 feat. DJ Neoteric »

This week we have another super special guest mixtape that you can download here or from that little link on the sidebar. Jeremiah aka DJ Neoteric is a Vancouver favourite and a nice guy to boot. If you don’t know what a Neoteric is (full disclosure: I had to wikipedia it) “the Neoteric period refers to avant-garde poets and their poetry, specifically those Greek and Latin poets in the Hellenistic Period (323 BC onwards) who propagated a new style of Greek poetry, deliberately turning away from the classical Homeric epic poetry.” That’s pretty intense and I can safely say Jeremiah officially has the deepest DJ name in Vancouver. You used to be able to see him spinning at clubs around town every night of the week but now he’s focussing solely on out of town gigs. Lucky for you he’s compiled a mixtape to download which includes Felix Da Housecat, Domino, Iron & Wine, The Stooges, Hot Chip and a whole lot more.

If you like what you hear, there are a ton more actual mixes to be had on his website www.djneoteric.com, from www.urb.com/podcasts, or from this link here (a mere 8000 people have enjoyed that one so far).

Tony Wong from Wrongwroks »

To describe something as “big in Japan” has become a cheap T-shirt cliché. Regardless, it’s one of the most apt descriptions one can use when talking about Wrongwroks (wrong rocks). Vancouverite Tony Wong’s line Wrongwroks is available in two stores in Canada. It’s available in 80 in Japan.

Tony got into art and fashion in an unlikely way, his English sucked. Unable to get into the University of British Columbia, he enrolled in the communication design program at Emily Carr. When he wasn’t studying, he was sneaking into the darkrooms and screenprint labs to hone his talents. After graduating he did a brief stint as a commercial designer in Hong Kong then returned to Vancouver. Fashion wasn’t the goal from the onset and he began making limited edition art prints, or “fucking exclusive” art prints as they’re called on the Wrongwroks website.

Print’s Not Dead: Sneeze Magazine Issue 2 »

Another issue of Sneeze Magazine showed up in the newspaper box on the corner of Abbott and Water this week. Once again, it makes the cheap laminate flooring in my apartment look that much better. It’s also the first magazine to have photos of Darryl Strawberry, Ricky Henderson, skateboarding and fur suit sex all in the same issue. Go pick yourself up a copy for two bucks. If you missed the premier issue you can have a look at it here or order a copy from the Sneeze website

Weekly Mixtape 11: Here Comes The Rain Again »

Three year anniversary of Katrina just passed and it’s looking like another hurricane is going to hit Louisiana just as the Republican National Convention gets going. Semi-related, a hurricane from New Orleans is going to hit Vancouver on Saturday October 18 as Quinton and Miss Pussycat just announced a show at the Biltmore. Quintron and Miss Pussycat call their sound Swamp Tech and it’s mostly made with an organ and an instrument Quintron invented called The Drum Buddy. Oh yeah, and part of their live act involves a puppet show. Don’t miss this one. Download the mix here or from the sidebar.

Tracklist after the jump which includes Morgan Geist, Pop Levi, Final Fantasy, Modest Mouse and Lykke Li.

Victory Square Block Party This Monday »

On Monday September 1st, Victory Square will see a slightly higher class of people loitering around the park all day. Between 2 and 9pm, the good people at The Only Magazine will be staging the fourth annual Victory Square Block Party. This free event will feature an eclectic lineup of local bands including Mohawk Lodge, The Green Hour, Basketball and Narduwar the Human Serviette’s band The Evaporators. DJ My!Gay!Husband! and comedy troupe Bronx Cheer will attempt to pacify the crowd between sets. Block Party festival organizer Cameron Reed exudes that the event will be “a reasonably good time” for all those in attendance. On a more serious note he adds “It’ll be a great day. The weather is supposed to be amazing. All of the bands are fantastic. We’re unfortunately saying goodbye to Mohawk Lodge who are moving to Toronto and Basketball who are moving to Spain. I promise that the sprinklers will not go off.”

The after party takes place at The Bourbon with Bison, Sorcerers and My!Gay!Husband!
