I am at a stage in my martial arts training where I wish to test my abilities in a real world situation. I am looking to hire two dwarfs or small women who have stunt training or previous martial arts experience (no black belts please) to attack me. The attack will happen any time during my day, as much surprise as possible is preferred. I will provide you both with my daily route to and from work and other pertinent information.

Although injury is a possibility, I promise not to execute any “finishing moves”. If the first event is satisfying, I am open to further scenarios.

Andrew Salgado Solo Exhibition »

boys night out by Andrew Salgado. title=

Boys' Night Out by Andrew Salgado. Oil on Canvas. 60x48

Rising artstar, Andrew Salgado, will have his first ever solo exhibition in Vancouver from August 26 to September 7 at the Interurban Gallery on 1 East Hastings. Young Salgado currently has a bit of a buzz swirling around him and recently enrolled in the prestigious Chelsea College of Art in London. The body of work on display is entitled Boys’ Night Out and was inspired with the artist’s personal experience with hate crime (the preview image above is a self-portrait of Salgado). It’s not all one big downer though. A percentage of the proceeds will go to Spread The Net, Belinda Stronach’s charity that’s hoping to eradicate Malaria. The artists reception takes place on Thursday September 4 from 6-11pm. The artist will be in attendance and rumour has it Belinda Stronach may be there too.

Miss Kittin and The Hacker Live Performance »

On Tuesday September 16 at The Plaza, Intimate Productions presents Miss Kittin and The Hacker live. You probably remember this electroclash duo from their 2001 hit Frank Sinatra. That was an expeically rough year for a lot of people so the video is below to refresh your memory. (Careful it has a couple naughty words)

Miss Kittin and The Hacker are back together and touring a live show now. I repeat, live show and not a DJ set with Miss Kittin singing over vinyl or MP3s or whatever the hell DJs play these days. Anyhow, this is probably a show you don’t want to miss. Tickets are available at Beatstreet, Vinyl and Zulu or online at Clubzone and will set you back 25 francs.

Lotus Long Weekend: Five Year Anniversary with Jay Tripwire »

Intimate Productions, purveyors of all your house music needs in Vancouver, have recently announced the Lotus Long Weekend on Sunday August 31. This will be the five year anniversary bash of their Sunday evening parties which span over three different venues: The Lotus, Lick and Honey. To sweeten the deal (see what I did there), local tech house hero Jay Tripwire will be headlining and it will be his 10th anniversary of playing at the Lotus. Jay was unavailable for comment on this event. But if you did ask him thoughts on playing at this event, he’d probably say something really offensive and cynical, then make fun of one of the promoters and then make fun of you for asking. I will say that Tripwire is the only DJ in this town who shoplifts from 7-11 and collects Transformers. Tripwire is also closing in on his 10,000th MySpace friend. To mark the occasion, he’ll be awarding the lucky 10,000th friend $10,000 at the Lotus at the conclusion of his set…. Jay was unavailable for comment on this as well.

Also on the bill are Tom Thomas, Nigel Ray, Mat the Alien, Abasi, Glyn and The Lighta! Sound Crew. Tickets are available at Beatsreet, Vinyl and Zulu or online at Clubzone for a mere 12 sheckels.

Some fun Facts about Dave Dirk
-Dave and all his friends were called the Geek Squad in high school by the in crowd. Now he works at Geek Squad and laughs at all the weird porn those people have hidden on their computers.
-Dave is the only person in this city who can get away with wearing lingerie and a fedora at the same time.
-Dave says he “likes to overthrow small governments in his spare time.” Translated, that means he “likes to point out how horrible your grammar is on a dozen local internet messageboards in his spare time.”

The Flesheaters’ Ball at The Fall »

What are you doing on August 16? Celebrating Stockwell Day or Rumer Willis’ birthday? Eating Halloumi, a delicious cheese that’s made from goat and sheep milk, to commemorate Cyprus gaining independence from the UK? That all sounds just fine but a way better idea would be to dress up like a zombie and lurch around the streets of Vancouver then attend a wicked awesome party at The Fall afterwards.

The Fall opened almost a year ago on 644 Seymour and it’s a pretty a slick tattoo and piercing parlour slash clothing store slash art gallery slash place to get artistically slashed (the correct term is ’scarification’ if you were wondering). On Saturday August 16, the knives and needles will play second fiddle to a daylong Zombie extravaganza. Between 9am and 4pm, makeup artists will be on hand to sufficiently zombify you for the Vancouver Zombie Walk. After you’re done freaking out tourists and old people, you can come back to The Fall for The Flesheaters’ Ball, an a all night zombie celebration with zombie themed art installations, live painting, a zombie fashion show and a whole lot of liquor. People without costume will be attacked and probably have something sharp shoved through their nose or eyebrow. If you cant make it out, the art show runs from August 14-17. Oh, and in case anyone asks you what your favourite zombie movie of all time is, the correct answers are George A Romero’s Dawn of the Dead or Lucio Fulci’s Zombi 2.

Weekly Mixtape 7 Feat. Trevor Risk »

trevor risk

This week we have a very special mixtape from none other than Trevor Risk that can be downloaded here or from the link on the sidebar. You can see Trevor DJing at a plethora of Vancouver clubnights including, Mondays at Shine, Tuesdays and Thursdays at Republic and Saturdays at The Modern. He’s also in a great little local band called The Good News who just finished recording their debut album.

Some other fun facts about Trevor Risk:
-Trevor could do the Hawaii Ironman and his hair would still be perfect when he crossed the finish line.
-Trevor likes the Kansas City Chiefs for some strange reason.
-Trevor nearly got Red Robinson to play his sock hop night on Monday at Shine but was denied at the last minute by Mr. Robinson’s management. Also, I know someone who claims Red Robinson farted on him once on the bus… but that doesn’t seem like it could be true.

Tracklisting after the jump which includes… New Edition… Chicago… and Lyle Lovett? Trust us, it sounds great
